What happens when I first visit?

  • At the first appointment there is a bit of form filling. A full case history is taken which involves detailed questioning about the problem you have come with, as well as information on past medical matters.
  • An examination is then carried out. You may be asked to do some simple movements and the osteopath will feel the area and ask you to lie down.
  • You will often need to remove some clothing so the relevant area can be accessed. Wearing loose clothing can be helpful
  • The osteopath will discuss their findings with you and explain the diagnosis and treatment plan.
  • Sometimes it is useful to have test results such as x-ray or blood tests and your osteopath is always ready to communicate with your GP (with your permission.)
  • Sometimes treatment other than osteopathy is recommended.
  • The initial session takes about one hour and subsequent treatments are 30 minutes.
